The NHS recommends using stair gates at the top and bottom of stairs until a child is at least 2 years old, but this may vary depending on their development. You should stop using the gate sooner if your child is able to climb over it or use it unsafely.

For the top of stairs, parents are advised to use a screw-fit gate, and the gate should open towards the landing to reduce fall risk. Pressure-fit gates can loosen over time and may become hazardous at the top of stairs, and they can also create a trip hazard.

Our gates include an optional one-way restrictor, which allows the gate to be fitted safely for use at the top of stairs. The gate will open in both directions without this.
